My Plain Jane

You may think you know the story. After a miserable childhood, penniless orphan Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester. Despite their significant age gap (!) and his uneven temper (!!), they fall in love—and, Reader, she marries him. (!!!)

Or does she?

Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.

Nu var det ganska många år sedan jag läste ”Jane Eyre” men jag minns ändå en hel del av historien. Förmodligen för att det är en klassisk berättelse som vi har sett både i bokformat och på film. De allra flesta känner till den, och just därför är det så roligt när det kommer en re-telling och i det här fallet, med övernaturliga inslag.

I ”My Plain Jane” har Jane Eyres författare Charlotte Brontë blivit en del av historien, närmare bestämt Janes bästa vän. Bara det tycker jag är hur spännande som helst då jag gissar att författarna har gjort den tolkningen av Charlottes relation till sin egen karaktär. Vi får möta flera av de karaktär som finns i originalberättelsen, men även några nya, och några av de har lite annorlunda egenskaper än vad vi har sett tidigare.

De övernaturliga inslagen består främst av spöken och boken innehåller en del spökjakt, en del förbannelser och mycket spänning. Jag tyckte möjligen att den började lite segt men jag tyckte ändå att det tog sig mot slutet. Efter att ha läst ”My Lady Jane” hade jag även förhoppningar om att denna skulle vara lika humoristisk och driva lite med läsaren men jag upplevde den inte alls på samma sätt, och därav något sämre betyg. Det var dock väldigt roligt och fascinerande att läsa om Jane Eyre på det här sättet och jag ser fram emot att läsa sista delen i serien om alla Janies.

Or does she?

Jane put a hand to her chest, as if she was now having true difficulty breathing. ”How could they solve Mr. Brocklehurst’s murder?”
”They can speak to the dead, apparently. I imagine they could simply ask him.”
”I have to go.” Jane started to gather up her painting supplies, in such a hurry she smeared paint on her dress. Then she was practically bounding up the hill in the direction of the school. Charlotte watched her go. She opened her notebook.
It’s the quiet ones who you have to watch out for, she read.
Jane Eyre had the opportunity and the motive to kill Mr. Brocklehurst, but could she have actually done it? Was she capable of cold-blooded murder for the good of the school? And if not, then why was she so agitated about the news of the Society? If not a murder, what else could Jane be hiding?
It was a mystery.
One that Charlotte Brontë intended to solve.
